Welcome to the Umakunda–Dudhkund–Tate Tenzing Hillary Trail

The Tenzing Hillary Trail Development Program, encompassing Umakunda Rural Municipality in Ramechhap District and the Dudhkunda and Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipalities in Solukhumbu District, is a major initiative launched with a firm commitment to achieving economic, social, and cultural transformation through holistic tourism development.

Vision Energy and Power Ltd. has been the primary financial partner in this ambitious endeavor. On Chaitra 10, 2080 (March 23, 2024), a crucial meeting was held at Indreni Foodland, Kathmandu, with the participation of Mr. Sher Bahadur Sunuwar, Chairperson of Umakunda Rural Municipality; Mr. Ngangtundu Sherpa, Chairperson of Ward No. 1, Gumdel; and Mr. T.N. Acharya, Chairperson of Vision Energy and Power Ltd., along with their respective teams, local residents of Lahachewar, and other key stakeholders.

As per the resolutions of this meeting, a portion of the budget allocated under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Vision Energy and Power Ltd.’s Nhapshe-Likhu Hydropower Project has been designated for the integrated development of the Lahachewar region. This development program is being implemented through the tourism budget earmarked for the Tenzing Hillary Trail, as decided by the general assembly held at the ward level in Umakunda Rural Municipality. The initiative is expected to create a long-term positive impact in the region.

Key Objectives of the Project

Identification of New Economic Opportunities and Job Creation (Direct and Indirect):

The development of the Tenzing Hillary Trail aims to utilize local natural, cultural, and human resources to generate sustainable economic activities. This includes promoting homestays, guiding and trekking services, handicrafts, and transportation facilities, as well as expanding markets for agriculture-based products. By enhancing these sectors, the program seeks to create both direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly for youth, thereby strengthening the local economy and fostering community participation.

Reduction of Outmigration and Improvement of Living Standards:

By focusing on infrastructure development, economic stimulation, and improved access to basic services, the project intends to minimize outmigration from the region. Increased opportunities for income generation and entrepreneurship will encourage people to remain in their communities. The initiative will also uplift living standards by improving access to quality education, healthcare, drinking water, sanitation, and other essential services, helping to establish a more self-reliant and sustainable local society.

Preservation and Promotion of Local Products, Culture, Traditions, and Indigenous Lifestyles:

This objective highlights the integration of tourism with local culture and traditional livelihoods. The project promotes local crafts, agricultural produce, traditional music and dance, ethnic cuisine, and customs to preserve and celebrate cultural diversity. By showcasing authentic local experiences, it strengthens cultural pride among residents while offering visitors meaningful insights into the region’s rich heritage, contributing to cultural preservation and responsible tourism development.

Enhancement of Local Government and Institutional Revenues:

The growth of tourism in the region will enable local governments to generate additional revenue through service charges, entry permits, business taxes, and related fees. These funds will enhance their capacity to reinvest in essential infrastructure, environmental conservation, and community services. The program encourages effective governance, transparency, and collaboration between institutions, ensuring that tourism contributes directly to sustainable local development and long-term financial stability.

Development and Promotion of New Tourism Destinations:

Through the establishment of new trekking routes such as the Tenzing Hillary Trail, the program aims to position the region as a prominent national and international tourism destination. The combination of scenic mountain landscapes, cultural experiences, and adventure tourism opportunities will attract diverse groups of travelers. This initiative promotes regional tourism diversification, encourages longer stays, and enhances Nepal’s reputation as a center for nature-based and cultural exploration.

Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Resource Management:

The project places strong emphasis on protecting the Himalayan environment through eco-friendly and sustainable tourism practices. Key activities include forest conservation, waste management, clean energy adoption, and environmental awareness campaigns among trekkers and locals. By promoting responsible tourism and sustainable resource use, the initiative seeks to maintain ecological balance, ensure the long-term health of natural ecosystems, and preserve the beauty of the Himalayas for future generations.

Program Management

The program is being managed by the Kangchorten (A) Community Forest User Sub-Committee under the Gaurishankar Area Project, with Co-Program Management by Chhukarma Tourism Development.

The visionary leadership, responsibility, and commitment to development demonstrated by Vision Energy and Power Ltd. in the successful implementation of this project are highly commendable. This community-focused initiative marks the beginning of a new chapter in local development.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Vision Energy and Power Ltd. for their significant contribution and express our sincere hope for continued partnership in the future.
